Member for Upper Hunter, Dave Layzell visited Muswellbrook South Public School today for the official sod turn to mark the beginning of almost $21 million worth of construction work at the school.

The upgraded school will deliver brand new facilities to meet the growing student and community needs in the area, and will include 13 new permanent learning spaces (including five new support learning spaces) within a new split-level building, a relocated covered outdoor learning area and a sports court.

The upgrade will also include the refurbishment of 18 permanent learning spaces, upgrades to the administrative building, a new basketball court, half court and two handball courts, landscaping and seating areas as well as removal of demountable buildings.

Mr Layzell said he was delighted to be at the school to see the beginning of construction with the development application now approved allowing demountable buildings to make way for permanent teaching spaces ready for Term One of 2024.

“It’s an exciting project for our local area and I’m so glad to be able to be here today,” Mr Layzell said.

“I look forward to seeing this project delivered and the benefits it will bring the Muswellbrook community for generations to come.”

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the new facilities will greatly benefit the growing school community.

“The NSW Government continues to deliver important school infrastructure to communities around the state and I’m proud of the wonderful facilities we’re providing for schools like Muswellbrook South Public School.”

The NSW Government is investing $8.6 billion in school infrastructure over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 160 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW.

This builds on the more than $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.
